All posts for the month September, 2014

All,

You probably know that the CISD “Write-A-Check” campaign is underway. If you don’t know, Write-A-Check is the annual event used to raise funds for technology at each school. All funds collected are matched by the district and directly benefit the school where they are collected. VRE administration and the PTO have asked the VRE Dads Club to help kick-start the campaign by raising awareness among VRE parents.

We need 6 dads, or just 1 from each class (K, 1, 2 ,3 ,4, 5), to help encourage parents to donate to the Write-A-Check campaign. We will don Super Hero shirts and greet parents in the car lanes as they drop of their kids on this Friday morning to remind them to write a check for technology, or thank them if they already have written a check. You only need to volunteer from 7:20-7:50AM on one day; 30 minutes, that’s it! Please contact me at doug@vredads.org and let me know if  you can volunteer.

Thank you,

Doug Stephan

The VRE Dads Club is looking for a utility trailer they can use for the Coppell High School homecoming parade scheduled for Wednesday October 15th from 6-9 PM. The trailer will be decorated and the Character Council and Safety Patrol will ride on the float during the parade. Ideally the trailer will have the following characteristics:

  • 16 to 20 feet long
  • Smooth wooden or steel floor
  • Low sides
  • Low tailgate / ramp (or none at all)
  • Regular 2″ tow hitch (no gooseneck or other towing system unless you can pull it)

We need the trailer to be available for a few days prior to the parade so it can be decorated. I can pick up the trailer, tow it during the parade, and return it to you after the event as long as it has a regular hitch. Please send me an email at doug@vredads.org if you have a trailer that you are willing to loan for this event.

Sincerely,

Doug Stephan

All,

We had a great kickoff meeting last week with a really good turn out; it’s exciting to have so many dads participating so early in the school year. Thanks to Akiim, Greg, Avinath, Fez, Ravi, Gio, Joseph, Manoj, Juleon for turning out, and a special thanks to Tarun for helping to organize the meeting.

We had a lot of good input regarding the 2014-2015 school year events and some excellent suggestions for increasing participation including:

  • Having more events on Friday when dads are more likely to be in town
  • Assigning volunteer opportunities by grade to create more urgency
  • Increasing social media use

Regarding the last one, I’ve set up VRE Dads Club pages on Facebook and Google+ so be sure and stop by those pages and friend, like or add it to your circles. I’ll probably be adding a Twitter account soon as well, and we also intend to follow through on the other suggestions.

I’ll be posting the event schedule as it firms up over the next several weeks so be watching for more volunteer opportunities. Finally, we’ll be returning to our regular meeting night (first Tuesday) in October so be watching for the meeting time and place, and if you couldn’t attend the meeting this month, be sure to mark your calendar for next month.

Sincerely,

Doug Stephan

Hello VRE Dads & Supporters,

This is just a quick reminder that the planning meeting to kick of the 2014-2015 school year will be this Tuesday, September 16th at 8:00 PM in the Valley Ranch Elementary library.  We have lots of ideas for events we can sponsor during the upcoming school year and many things to discuss. Bring your friends and neighbors who are also VRE dads; we need all the help we can get!  The more of us who participate, the less amount of time each of us has to contribute individually.  Light snacks will be served

You have probably noticed we implemented a new mail service which will make it easier for people to unsubscribe so please click on the link at the bottom of this message if you have moved out of the area or no longer want to be included on this mailing list.

Finally, if you haven’t volunteered recently (or never) you should really consider it this year; check out the front page of the website for all the ways that parent involvement improves student performance. A big thanks to all of you who have volunteered in the past and plan to volunteer again this year; we really appreciate the difference you make at VRE!

Sincerely,

Doug Stephan

Hello Valley Ranch Elementary Supporters,

Well the short, cool (relatively speaking) summer is almost over and it’s time for the VRE Dads Club to have its kick off meeting for the new school year. We have lots of ideas for events we can sponsor during the upcoming school year and many things to discuss. The planning meeting will be held next Tuesday, September 16th at 8PM in the Valley Ranch Elementary Library. Light snacks will be served! Bring your friends and neighbors who are also VRE dads; we need all the help we can get! The more of us who participate, the less amount of time each of us has to contribute individually.

You have probably noticed something different about this message. We are trying to become a bit more automated (working our way into the 21st century!). As such, we have a new website at www.vredads.org. We’ll be posting messages and events to this site and you should automatically receive an e-mail whenever a new post is added. We believe this will make it easier for you to keep track of the different volunteer opportunities, and hopefully it will improve participation rates. So please take a look at the website and provide feedback regarding what you would like to see on it!

Also, if you have moved out of the area or no longer want to be included on this mailing list, please send me an e-mail at doug@vredads.org (or just reply to this message) and I’ll be happy to remove you from the list. In the future we hope to implement a mailing list service that has automatic subscribe / unsubscribe capabilities, but for now we’ll just do it this way.

Sincerely,
