Dads,

Just a quick reminder, today is the last day for you to complete a background check if you plan to visit your child’s classroom before our after the “Lunch with Dad” event next Friday November 7th. What you do in the classroom will be determined by the teacher, so contact your child’s teacher and set up a time before or after lunch to visit the classroom.

Once again this year, the Pre-K Pumpkin Patch was held in the VRE Garden and it brought many smiles to the children’s faces. The event started by reading a Halloween / Fall Harvest themed book to the children, after which the kids were allowed to wander through the garden and select a small pumpkin to take home. Each class also had a large pumpkin which they carved and decorated together. A few photos are shown below and more are contained in the Photo Gallery.

A special thanks goes to FreshPoint Produce for donating most of the pumpkins; if you ever need fresh, locally grown produce, be sure to check them out at:

4721 Simonton Road
Dallas, TX 75244
(near The Galleria)
Phone: 972.385.5800

Also, thanks to Tom Thumb for offering a discount for the remainder of the pumpkins. Finally, thanks to Greg Ellis for picking up the pumpkins and delivering them to the school, and to Gio for volunteering to handle the activities for the afternoon classes.

You might be familiar with “Multicultural night which is held each Fall at VRE.  However this year the VRE PTO is sponsoring a “Community Night” instead of Multicultural Night on Thursday November 6th. The Dads Club will sponsor and run some type of game (e.g., basketball toss, bean bag toss, ring toss, etc) to raise funds for our group as well as to provide entertainment to the people attending the event.

We will need several dads to volunteer for the game station (e.g., collecting money / tickets, running the game, dispensing prizes) so please register if you can volunteer for a 30 minute shift at the game station. Come out and support your school.

Several VRE dads donated their time this morning to remind parents to Write-a-Check for technology if they haven’t already, and to thank those who had already donated. Thanks to Ravi, Yufeng and Greg for showing up and donating their time.

We also presented a check for $1200 to Mrs. Arterbery for the campaign, which will be matched by the district to purchase $2400 worth of iPads and other technology for VRE students.

Dads,

Can you help raise money for technology at VRE by standing in the car line tomorrow morning? The PTO has asked us to greet and remind parents to contribute to the Write-a-Check campaign as they drop off there children for school. We will open car doors for arriving students, greet parents and remind them about Write-a-Check. It will only take 30 minutes of your time.

We still need a few more dads to arrive at the school tomorrow morning October 27th at 7:15AM and you will be finished by 7:50AM. Please register if you can join us to help encourage people to donate to the school’s technology fund. We will also be delivering the Dads Club’s donation to the Write-a-Check campaign and taking a photo with Mrs. Arterbery to commemorate the donation; so come out and get your photo taken with the Principal!

Also, please write a check and deliver it to the PTO or go to this website to contribute if you haven’t already; the Write-a-Check campaign ends October 28th! Thanks in advance for your help.

Dads,

How would you like to spend some time with your child at school? One thing is for sure, they will love you for doing it! This was one of our most popular events last year so come have lunch with your child. Lunch schedules are as follows:

Pre-K AM 10:10 – 10:40
Pre-K PM 12:05 – 12:35
K 10:45 – 11:15
1st 11:00 – 11:30
2nd 11:30 – 12:00
3rd 12:00 – 12:30
4th 12:30 – 1:00
5th 1:00 – 1:30

Optionally, you can also spend some time in your child’s classroom before or after lunch.  Last year dads participated in a variety of classroom activities such as math drills, science experiments, and collaborating with groups working on projects. What you do in the classroom will be determined by the teacher, so contact your child’s teacher and set up a time before or after lunch to help in the classroom. Also, you must complete a background check by October 31st.

Note, this is the morning after the VRE Community Night (Multicultural Night) so clear your schedule to attend both of these fun and important events. We hope to see you there!

Dads,

If you work near (or pass by) the Galleria we need your help to pick up the pumpkins (4 Medium-sized plus 2 boxes of small pumpkins) for the Pre-K Pumpkin Patch this coming Monday October 27th between 8AM and 3:30PM. The pickup location is on Simonton Rd, just North of I-635 between Walsh and the North Dallas Tollway.  It should only take about 15 minutes of your time so you can do it during your lunch break. Please contact me if you can help us out and I will give you detailed instructions. Thanks in advance for your help!

The annual CISD homecoming parade was held this past Wednesday October 15th and the theme for the parade was “Under the Sea”.  The VRE Dads Club teamed up with the PTO to enter and decorate a float with an undersea motif.  A few photos are shown below and more are in the Photo Gallery.

The Dads Club rented the trailer, and purchased the supplies and built an overhead frame to hang decorations. Thanks to Tarun for helping to build the frame to support the decorations, and to Greg and Gio for decorating assistance and support.

As is usual, the VRE float was one of the best decorated in the parade and we received many compliments.  Ms. Arterbery related that she heard someone say that VRE had the best float of any elementary school! A fun time was had by everyone involved and we are already looking forward to next year.

Dads,

As you probably know, Write-a-Check is an annual CISD fund raising campaign. The funds raised by each school are kept by that school and matched by the district. This year, VRE is going to use the funds raised to purchase technology (iPads, tablets) for the classrooms. This important technology fund raising campaign can really use our help to make a final push since October 29th is the final day.

Unfortunately the fund raising campaign has gotten off to a slow start this year and we need your help in two ways:

  1. Please write a check and deliver it to the PTO or go to this website to contribute if you haven’t already
  2. The PTO has asked us to greet and remind parents to contribute to the Write-a-Check campaign as they drop off there children for school.

We need 6 dads to arrive at the school next Monday morning October 27th at 7:15AM and you will be finished by 7:50AM; that’s only about a half hour of your time. NOTE: this is a different date than was listed in our last message because the Write-a-Check campaign has been extended by a few days. Please register if you can help us encourage people to donate to the school’s technology fund. Thanks in advance for your help.

Dads,

We had another meeting this week with pretty good attendance. Thanks to Joseph, Binny, Ravi and Tarun for attending the meeting. Several topics were discussed and decisions were made including:

  • Pre-K Pumpkin Patch – on Tuesday October 27th we will scatter small pumpkins throughout the VRE garden and read a Fall Harvest / Halloween themed story to the Pre-K students; once around 10AM (morning classes) and again at around 1:30PM (afternoon classes). Ravi offered to do one of the time slots so we need one more volunteer; please let me know if you can help by registering here. Also, we need around 65 small pumpkins for the kids to take home and 4 large pumpkins for them to carve in the classroom. Please contact me if you know of a business that might either donate or provide the pumpkins at a discount.
  • Write-a-Check Donation – every year the Dads Club makes a donation to the Write-a-Check campaign because the donation is matched by CISD. Currently we have almost $1500 in our operating account so we agreed at the meeting to donate $1200 to VRE this year, and keep the reminder in the account to cover expenses until our next fund raiser.October 2014 meeting2
  • Write-a-Check Promotion – the PTO has asked us to greet parents and urge them to contribute to the Write-a-Check campaign as they drop off there children for school. This important technology fund raising campaign has been going rather slowly so far this year and they can really use our help to make a final push since October 24th is the final day. We need 4 to 6 dads arrive at the school this Wednesday morning October 22nd at 7:15AM and you will be finished by 7:50AM; that’s only about a half hour of your time. Please register if you can help us encourage people to donate to the school’s technology fund.
  • Community Night Game – this year the VRE PTO is sponsoring a “Community Night” instead of Multicultural Night on Thursday November 6th. The PTO has asked the Dads Club to sponsor and run some type of game to raise funds for our group as well as to provide entertainment to the people attending the event. We discussed many options for the game including: dunking booth (which we quickly ruled out), basketball toss, bean bag toss, bowling, etc. We will need to decide on a game and purchase or obtain the required equipment and materials as well as prizes; please e-mail me if you have suggestions for the game. We will also need a several dads to volunteer for the game station (e.g., collecting money / tickets, running the game, dispensing prizes) so please register if you can volunteer for a 30 minute shift at the game station.
  • Dads Club Promotion – meeting attendees discussed the best way to notify people regarding upcoming meetings, events and volunteer opportunities. We decided that Facebook should be a more critical component of those efforts and Ravi and Josef volunteered to assume administrative responsibilities for the Facebook page.  Thank you Joseph and Ravi for stepping up!
  • Future Meeting Nights – the group discussed whether or not we might get a better attendance if we change the monthly meetings to a different day of the week. We decided we should probably leave this up to the dads to decide so look for a poll to come out soon and vote for the day of the week that is most convenient for you to attend the meetings.

Finally, thanks for reading this recap and volunteering to help us. If you haven’t already, please commit to volunteering at one or more of the upcoming events; it doesn’t take a lot of your time but it makes a big impact on the quality of your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Doug Stephan
