Recap

As you probably heard, the Dads’ Club held a fund raiser last Friday. The movie “Moana” was screened in the school cafeteria after receiving the most votes in a student poll.  Over 100 attendees pre-registered for the event and another 25-40 walked up and paid at the door.  The reviews were very positive from everyone. Attendees purchased movie tickets, pizza, popcorn and drinks. Total revenues exceeded $750 and net profits totaled about $550! While not as profitable as the last movie night, this result was still quite good.

We couldn’t have held such a successful event without the assistance of many dedicated volunteers including:

  • Principal Arterbery for providing access to her staff and the facilities, and for kicking off the event
  • Assistant Principals Mary Myles French and Leigh Ann Howard for assisting during the event
  • VRE Office Admins, Michell Margolis and Megan Grantonic, who helped promote and organize the event
  • Cafe’ Manager Beth Tipton for allowing access to the warming ovens in the kitchen
  • Ms. Hilda for letting us use the cafeteria and re-arrange her tables
  • Hari Natarajan and Niraj Shah for volunteering during “Lunch w/ Dads”
  • Librarian Anu Khosla for loaning the computer and projector
  • Arpan Prakash and Music Teacher Lauren Zeek for assisting with the video and audio setup
  • Muhammad Qassafi, Viren Karia, Manoj Sethi, Karthick Soundararajan, Antonio Valente, and Apurva Dholabhai for manning the registration & ticket desk, popcorn production, and food service
  • Bliss Blodget-Stephan, Zoe Stephan, Gianna Valente, and Mahesh Anand for initial food setup and serving help
  • … and last but certainly not least, Tarun Anand for organizing, helping with morning announcements, purchasing supplies, and generally performing about half the work required to pull off this event
There were other volunteers who’s names I can’t recall but your help was greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone for making this event such a huge success. We plan on hosting another movie event in the Spring so stay tuned for details. Have happy and safe holidays!

The donation was the result of fund raisers held by the Dads’ club last year, including the Golf Tournament, and will benefit students and administrators at VRE. Thanks to all of you who donated time or money to the Dads’ club for making this donation possible.

The annual CISD homecoming parade was held last Wednesday September 28th.  The VRE Dads Club teamed up with the PTO to enter and decorate a float, and the theme of the VRE float was “Happy 20th Birthday VRE”.  A few photos are shown below.

The Dads Club picked up the truck, helped to decorate it, and drove the truck during the parade. Thanks to Gio for decorating assistance and support.

As is usual, the VRE float was one of the best decorated in the parade and we received many compliments.  A fun and satisfying time was had by everyone involved.

Once again this year, the Pre-K Pumpkin Patch was held in the VRE Garden and it brought many smiles to the children’s faces. The event started by reading a Halloween / Fall Harvest themed book to the children, after which the kids were allowed to wander through the garden and select a small pumpkin to take home. Each class also had a large pumpkin which they carved and decorated together. A few photos are shown below and more are contained in the Photo Gallery.

After several delays due to the monsoon season in DFW, the CISD Cricket Challenge finally went off on Saturday June 6 at VRE. There was a good number of players considering the tournament was delayed until after the school year. The kids played first and then the adults took the field. It was an exciting game but in the end the VRE squad triumphed over the R.J. Lee team by a score of 41-40. Thanks to all the people who came out and played. Have a great summer and we’ll see you next year.

Though the weather threatened to delay the 2015 VRE Field Day, it held off long enough to let the kids get outside and play water games, slip down water slides, jump on bounce houses, and laugh with their friends. Eventually the rain arrived after lunch and the kids were forced to go inside as a safety precaution but by that time they had already had a memorable day as evidenced by the photos below and a few more in the gallery.

Thanks to several dads who came out and helped setup and run the event including Bennie, Sridar, Raj, Ravi, Kirin, Mahdu, Greg and several others who’s names I can’t remember right now. Also a big thanks to Gio for taking the lead and organizing the event. The kids had a great time and really appreciated all the parents, teachers and staff who made this event a success.  I appreciate all of you who came out and helped; these events form many of your child’s school memories and we couldn’t do it without you!

Many people doubted the 2015 CISD Elementary Dads Golf Challenge would ever tee off considering all the rain we’ve had lately but the golf gods (and the brilliant sunshine) shone down upon us on Saturday.  Although the course was a little wet, the weather was beautiful and the soft greens offered up some low scores. The Kastrounis/Coenraad team from R.E. Lee were the low scorers while the father and child team of Zeff/Jenkins from Mockingbird won the high score prize. Michael Kastrounis won the long drive competition, Rich Schmidgall won the closest to the pin competition, while Chantel Kastrounis won the longest put competition. Thanks to the following sponsors for prize donations:

These prize donations are so important in helping to entice people to register and play. Please show your appreciation by supporting the businesses listed above.
All totaled the event raised over $1,000 for the three participating schools, with more than $400 going to VRE which will be doubled and applied towards technology during the Fall fund raising drive. See more photos of the event in the gallery and make plans to join us at this fantastic event next year!
